Special Session for District and Central Administration and Board of Education Members
To thrive over time, school districts (like all successful systems) need to be engaged in both continual improvement and continual innovation. To be as effective as they can be, today's schools need to look very different. Such innovation occurs when conditions favor it -- districts can encourage schools and their teachers to step outside the traditional boundaries, to try different pedagogical approaches and ways of organizing and managing learning. One of the most important things a district can do is to make this type of behavior accepted and expected. How to do this? Tim McDonald will explain what boards of education can do to set that process of “different” in motion through an Innovation Zone and split screen strategy.

This session will be led by Tim McDonald, a researcher at Harvard, and a senior fellow at the Center for Policy Design, where he is an associate of the project Education|Evolving.  He is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School and Hamline University. Tim has been awarded a Global Education Policy Fellowship from the Institute for Educational Leadership, and a Dukakis Fellowship from the Harvard Kennedy School that enabled him to work in the office of Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton.

Tim is the author of Unsustainable: A Strategy for Making Public Schooling More Productive, Effective, and Affordable (2010).

Attendees at this special portion of the PBL Institute will enjoy activities that will motivate and rejuvenate them to begin the work of the creation of an innovation zone in their own districts.

Project Creation Grades 6-12

Participants will actively learn how to get started designing, managing and assessing standards-focused projects.  Although Project-Based Learning has many variations in both teacher-led and student driven settings, the process is universal.   Discover how and why to emphasize process over product, support students through projects, and set high expectations for work.  Learn ways to increase students’ writing skills, develop real revision practices, help them conduct and cite authentic research, and create opportunities for community connections and public presentation of their efforts.  Best of all, discover the power of an assessment process that fosters true self-reflection and measurable personal and academic growth. PBL ignites passion for learning in all of us!

Project Creation Grades K-5

It is easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour of projects. As important as it is to create those tangibles, it's arguably the process of learning, through the experience, that has the greater impact on the learner. This session intends to engage participants in understanding and welcoming the complexities that come along with PBL practices. Together, we’ll explore strategies to provoke thinking and guide learners as they begin the process of discovery. Join this session to learn more about how to get started with your students on creating projects in the K-5 environment. You'll learn the concepts of starting small, planning ahead, and the difference between projects and Project Based Learning. Participants will walk away with the tools needed to start the project process in their own learning environments.
